About Strength Like The Sun
The beauty of Hawaii lies in the ocean that surrounds it’s islands, and is greatly enhanced by the strength of the sun. It plays on the waves, and creates beautiful contrasts of light and dark. As a part of my series “Lifted Countenance” this view of the sun rising, also represents Princess Ka’iulani, heir apparent, when Hawaii was illegally annexed.
She was a very young woman, still being educated in England, but she traveled to the US to plead for her nation. She said in a published statement “Today, I, a poor, weak girl…have strength to stand up for the rights of my people. I hear their wail in my heart and it gives me strength and courage and I am strong, strong in the faith of God, strong in the knowledge that I am right…” (from Kamehameha Schools, “Women’s History Month: Ka’iulani, beloved Princess”, March 17, 2021)
